Modified
Grade 6-8

Shen Crew Modified program is offered to students in Grade 6-8.  This program will introduce the sport of rowing.  Modified rowers row sculling boats, meaning they use two oars.  Generally they row either quads (4 rowers) or octs (eight rowers).

Practice takes place at the boathouse on Maritime Dr in the village of Alplaus.  Transportation is provided from the school to the boathouse.  A Shen bus picks up the entire Modified team in the bus port of Gowana Middle School.  Practice runs Monday through Friday and ends at 6PM.  Many families form carpools to transport the rowers home.  There are occasional Saturday practices or scrimmages. 

The team scrimmages with other Modified teams in the area such as Burnt Hills, Niskayuna, and Saratoga Rowing Clubs.  All rowers will be competing in the scrimmages.  All rowers practice and all rowers compete.  The season culminates with a Championship race with all local Modified Programs competing. 

All rowers must be able to swim.  A swim test is required and is arranged by Shen Crew at the start of the season.
