Novice/Freshman

Shen Crew’s Novice/Freshman program includes rowers from Grade 9 and rowers from grades 10-12 that have no previous rowing experience.  A rower is a novice rower for one year then they move up to the Varsity level.  One of the goals of the Novice/Freshman program is to teach rowers the skills needed to become competitive rowers.

Practice takes place at the boathouse on Maritime Drive in the Village of Alplaus.  Transportation is provided from the school to the boathouse.  A Shen bus picks up the entire Novice/Freshman/ Varsity team at the main entrance of High School East, near the new wing.  Students who attend High School West will take the shuttle bus to High School East to board the bus.  Practice runs Monday through Friday and ends at 6PM.  Many families form carpools to transport the rowers home.  There are occasional Saturday practices and races.

The majority of races are within the Capital Region.  Some races are out of town and travel may be required.

Please check our schedule on our calendar link for the tentative schedule.

All rowers must be able to swim.  A swim test is required and is arranged by Shen Crew at the start of the season.  A rower only has to pass a swim test once for Shen Crew.
